It is in the form of fine mineral powder which transforms into a paste like structure that binds and hardens when submerged in water.
Cement is the most important component of concrete.
It is used in construction projects worldwide
as it is an economical and high-quality construction
material.
It is a basic
component which is used in the construction of houses, schools, malls, hospitals, roads and many other
construction purposes.
It is used
almost in every situation including electrical and plumbing works.
There
are various types of cements depending upon the physical and chemical
requirements for specific purpose:
1. Ordinary Portland Cement:
It
is the most common type of cement
used generally all around the world and is the basic component of concrete, mortar, plaster etc. where a particular type of cement
properties are not required.
It is made
by mixing limestone or chalk with clay to form a metal like
structure which is then finally crushed into grey coloured cement.
2. Rapid Hardening Cement:
As
the name suggests, Rapid
Hardening Cement gains high
strength during initial days of setup.
So it is used in concrete where form work is
to be removed at an early stage.
It
is quite similar to that of Ordinary
Portland Cement but finer.
It is
manufactured by combining finely
grounded limestone with shale at a high temperature.
This type of cement is used for Road Pavement Works, Precast Concrete casting for beams, columns etc.
3. Quick Setting Cement:
Quick Setting Cement is used where the work
needs to be done quickly so that it
can repair products very fast.
It uses only 10 or 15 minutes to set which is really quick as compared to other
cements.
It is made by adding small quantity of AluminiumSulphate to cement
which is then grinded into very fine
powder.
It is done to accelerate the setting time
fast.
It is mainly used in underwater construction, rainy
& cold weather conditions and other purposes which require
quick strength in short span of time.
4. Coloured Cement:
Coloured Cement is obtained by mixing mineral pigments with ordinary cement.
Almost 5
to 10 percent colouring pigment is added to the cement but the percentage
should not exceed 10 percent as it
will effect cement’s strength.
Various pigments like Cobalt, Chromium Oxide, Ton
Oxide and Manganese
Oxide are used to give colour to the cement.
It is widely used in artificial marbles,
window slabs, floor finishing, stair treads etc.
5. White Cement:
White Cement has similar properties to that of grey cement, but different in colour.
It
is mainly used in white washing
purpose for decoration purposes.
It is prepared using raw materials free
from Iron Oxide and
is a type of white coloured Ordinary
Portland Cement.
It is used to produce a wide range of clean and bright colours after adding
pigments in it.
White Cement is used as a base coat before painting and also for
covering the hairline cracks on concrete surfaces to give smooth finish.
